HOLY WEEK 2024

at Grace and St John's

The culmination of our Lenten journey is our observance of Holy Week.  Palm Sunday (March 24) recalls Christ's entry into Jerusalem with a joyful procession, and then abruptly takes us to the foot of the cross.  Evening prayer is held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday; then the solemn services of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday commemorate the Last Supper and the arrest, trial, and death of Jesus.

Sorrow turns to joy with the angels' Easter message: "Why do you seek the living among the dead? The Lord is risen indeed!"

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday / the Sunday of the Passion ushers in the solemn observance of Holy Week.  Our worship on this day will feature a procession, dramatic reading of the Passion story, Holy Eucharist, and a closing rite in which we will gather at the wooden cross in front of the church and disperse in silence.

The Triduum

The Triduum (Latin for "three days") refers to Thursday through Saturday of Holy Week.  All of the church's  observances during these three days constitute one single liturgy or worship service -- there is no dismissal at the end of any of them, until the celebration of Christ's resurrection at Easter.

We are sharing several of these services with Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 600 Shepard Avenue, Hamden.
